Cast Iron opened in a unit off Attercliffe Road in 2011, with four platforms and a secondhand rack. There are twelve platforms now and the rack is still here.

We are a barbell gym. That is the whole idea. There are no screens on the wall, no class running through the middle of your session, and no machine that does the thinking for you. What there is: calibrated plates, competition bars, a lot of chalk, and somebody on the floor who can tell you why your third rep moved differently to your second.

Coaching is part of the membership rather than an upsell. If you have never held a barbell you get taken through it properly in your first week. If you have been lifting for fifteen years we will leave you alone unless you ask.

What we can prove

We only list what we actually hold. Happy to show you the paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be strong already?
No. A good number of our members had never picked up a barbell before they joined. That is exactly what the six-week Barbell basics course is for, and there is always a coach on the floor.
Is there a joining fee or a contract?
Neither. Membership is month to month and you can stop it any month. We would rather you stayed because you wanted to.
Can I try it before joining?
Yes. A day pass is £9 and gets you the full run of the floor. If you join afterwards we take the £9 off your first month.
What is actually on the floor?
Twelve platforms, eight racks, calibrated plates, competition bars, dumbbells up to 60kg, and a conditioning area at the back with sleds and ropes.
Is there parking?
Twelve free spaces at the unit, and on-street parking along Attercliffe Road outside peak hours.

A day pass is £9 and there is no sales conversation afterwards. Turn up, train, decide later.
